Guided vs semi-guided vs self-guided trips: the differences

Not every guided trip is guided in the same way. Our trips come in three styles, defined by how much of the trip is assisted in destination: fully guided (escorted), semi-guided (semi-escorted) and self-guided (independent). Here’s what each one means.

Fully guided (escorted) trips

A guided tour designed for travelers who prefer convenience and security. One or more tour leaders accompany a fixed group of travelers from the beginning of the itinerary, typically the day after arrival.
  • Fixed group: yes
  • Tour leader: yes
  • Level of guidance: around 80% of the trip is assisted in destination.
  • Free time: the itinerary may include designated pockets of free time for personal exploration or relaxation

Semi-guided (semi-escorted) trips

A balanced itinerary that combines independent exploration with partial guidance. You’re accompanied by tour leaders or supported by the frequent presence of local representatives during some portions of the trip.
  • Fixed group: partially
  • Tour leader or local assistance: partially
  • Level of guidance: 10% to 80% of the trip is assisted in destination, except the first and last day.
  • Social side: you can connect with a fixed or diverse group of fellow travelers during scheduled activities
  • Free time: plenty of time to explore on your own
  • Multi-country trips: when a trip combines countries with different types of guidance, the trip description clarifies the guidance for each country

Self-guided (independent) trips

A flexible itinerary designed for travelers who want to explore at their own pace, with an autonomous schedule enriched with select guided activities.
  • Fixed group: no
  • Tour leader: no
  • Level of guidance: 0% to 10% of the trip is assisted in destination
  • On-the-ground support: the itinerary may include a brief on-the-ground interaction to resolve last-minute questions, depending on the destination or if any trip details require clarification
  • Social side: you can connect with diverse, like-minded people during the scheduled activities
